Every once in a while I read a post, and when I’m through…all I can say is, “Wow!” This is one of those posts for me: What Cancer Can’t Do, from Wanda at Apples-Zeros. We get so tied up in the busy, hectic lives we live that often we don’t take time to stop and think about what truly matters in our lives!
Most people know very little about mesothelioma, a serious cancer that occurs in people exposed to asbestos. I was surprised to find out that most manufacturers were aware of the hazzards of asbestos as early as the 1920’s, yet asbestos continued to be used because it saved manufacturers money. Most coorporations knew of these hazzards. So that’s the bottom line…money was saved at the expense of people’s health! If you would like to know more, Mesothelioma Help has answers to questions plus support and help for those affected by it.
There are between two and three thousand new diagnoses of mesothelioma every year. The sad part is that it could have been prevented!
The hazards of asbestos were known as early as the 1920’s, and the first lawsuits against asbestos manufacturers were in 1929. Many of the businesses that manufactured products containing the toxic asbestos chose to use asbestos because it was cheap. There was an alternative fiber they could have used. Now, an aggressive cancer called mesothelioma strikes over 3000 individuals per year. Some of those people contact a mesothelioma lawyer.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelial cells and the only known, established cause is exposure to asbestos. In pleural mesothelioma, the toxic asbestos fibers are breathed in and become lodged in the pleural membrane that encases the lung. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which is a cancer of the membrane that lines the abdomen, is a more rare form. There is presently no known cure for mesothelioma.
I had a friend die of breast cancer and leave behind three children, the oldest was our daughter’s age, and the youngest had just celebrated her third birthday. I can remember having them over when their daughter was a tiny baby, and we were all focused on the joy of having a newborn. Little did I know that years later I would do the Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure” in her memory. My fibromyalgia has prevented me from participating in the race recently, but maybe one day I’ll be able to do it again. But there is something I can do now and that’s participate in “Pink for the Cure.”
I have several friends who are breast cancer survivors, and they all know that breast cancer research is so important! We can all do our part to help further this research. This month, there are several companies that have “Pink for the Cure” on their packaging and will donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. Also, you can go to 3 Day Mom for more info.
