Have You Tested for Dyslexia?

I helped a friend’s son once who was in second grade and having problems. He should have been in third grade. I went to his classroom and worked with him one or two mornings a week and some days we would work out in the hall. I could tell he was having trouble processing info, so one day I talked with a counselor and told her there was something wrong with his processing skills and asked if he had been tested for dyslexia. They had given him other tests before, sent him to another place for further testing, and  thought his problem was mostly behavioral. I explained to the counselor that I had worked for six years as a Resource Room teacher and knew something was wrong. I talked to his mom about the possibility of dyslexia, she requested dyslexia testing, they tested him, and the test showed that he was dyslexic. Now he goes to a dyslexia class every day.

Best Mortgage Rates

When we bought our house several years ago, we wanted the best mortgage rate available.  Anyone buying a house wants a mortgage loan that is competitive.  Mortgage loans, mortgage refinancing, and home equity loans help homeowners afford the home they’ve been wanting.   If someone has a high mortgage rate, then they seriously need to consider mortgage refinancing.  They can find out online what their mortgage rate would be.    A good mortgage company will help you find what’s best for you.

Recipe for Chewy Granola Snacks

Here’s a recipe for some yummy, healthy granola “bars” (well…actually they’re round) that we really like. They have a good amount of protein, fiber from the oatmeal and Spelt Flour, and healthy raisins. The dark chocolate chips satisfy my sweet tooth!

* 2 cups oats

* 1/2 cup Spelt Flour & 1/2 cup flour (or 1 cup flour)

* 1 cup protein powder (I use chocolate whey powder with protein isolates)

* 2/3 cup brown sugar

* 1/2 to 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips

* 1/2 cup raisins

* 1/4 cup canola oil

* 1 tsp cinnamon

* 1/2 tsp salt

* two 6 oz cartons of vanilla yogurt

Preheat the oven to 375F. Mix ingredients well. Spray cupcake pans with Crisco. (This recipe makes 24) Put a heaping tablespoon of batter in each cup and flatten out. Bake 12-15 minutes until edges are brown. Let cool.

Enjoy!

That Wall is Boring!

Do you have a wall in your home that you look at and think, “That wall is boring!”  I don’t now but I used too. Now I have trouble finding a place to hang something new. But if you have that problem, have you thought about adding a wall sconce, maybe two.  The type of lighting they provide adds warmth and interest to a wall.  They can accent something already on a particular wall, and maybe something that didn’t get noticed before will become a focal point due to the accent of the lighting.    Also, if you have a hallway or entryway that is lacking in interest, this type of lighting can make that area come alive.  No more boring walls!

Target Recalls Baby Rattles Again

Target is recalling baby rattles for the second time this year. The first recall of 460,000 plush baby rattles was January 18. These rattles had small pieces that could break off and become a choking hazzard. Yesterday they recalled 82,000 plush rattles with sports themes also because of a choking hazzard. These rattles were made in China. (recalls from China are beginning to sound like a broken record) There have been no reported injuries, but these rattles are filled with beads and can break open. In both recalls, there were no reports of choking occuring. I’m glad Target and other companies stay on top of things and recall items before an injury occurs.

Cute Baby Clothes

Our daughter dresses our new grandbaby, Baby J,  in such cute baby clothes.   Recently she dressed him in little blue jeans and a plaid button-up shirt.  He looked adorable!  And he has cute little sleepers and onsies which make him look so cuddly to hold.   Our son-in-law has a video game with an electric guitar that he enjoys playing after a long day at work, so she bought a cool T-shirt for Baby J that says “Rock Star.”  It is just too cute for words!   It’s always fun to see what cute baby clothes Baby J will have on next!

Our Dog has Bad Allergies!

Our poor little dachshund has terrible grass allergies.  We give her Benadryl and that’s always helped in the past.  She has such bad allergies this year, though, that she chews on herself to the point of bleeding.  She has to wear a cone a lot of the time so she can’t chew on herself when we’re gone or at night when we can’t watch her.  I read online where one vet recommended putting flaxseed on the dogfood and that would eventually eliminate the need for Benedryl.  Well….let me warn you!  I gave it to our dog for two days.  We noticed that everytime she would go outside to go potty, she would stink so badly when she came in.  It was almost a fishy smell.  And I’m not talking about smelling it when you were close to her.  I’m talking about a horrible smell that you noticed when you were several feet away from her.  It was really bad!  I finally made the connection and realized that the flaxseed affected the smell of her urine.  So, NO MORE flaxseed.  She’ll just have to be a “conehead” for a while longer until the grass pollen gets better.

How Many States?

We have been on vacations to several states including our home state of Texas.  We’ve been to Alabama, Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, and Hawaii.   If you count all the states we’ve been to, that list would be a lot more extensive.  Besides the states mentioned, we’ve been to Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Lousiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan.  That’s 18 states.  Now if I count the states I also went to as a child, then that would be 20.  I’ve been close to Nevado but not actually in the state.  My in-laws have, though.  (I wonder if they stayed at the Rio Las Vegas?)   It’s fun to count up how many states you’ve visited.
