One of our favorite places to visit on a vacation is Colorado because of the beautiful mountains. When we travel, we like to get a discount on lodging wherever we are. There are other places that have mountains that are pretty places to visit. There are mountains not far from Las Vegas, though most people think only of going to see the shows, etc. If you happen to be going to Las Vegas, check out hotels Las Vegas for the lowest price on hotels possible.

Fruit & Pecan Cookies
This is a delicious recipe that I started making 25 years ago. I got the recipe from a teacher friend with whom I taught school.
Cut in large pieces:
- 2 pounds dates
- 8 ounces candied cherries
- 8 ounces candied pineapple
- 16 ounces pecans (4 cups)
Sift the following ingredients and scatter over fruit & nuts:
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Cream the following ingredients:
- 1 cup butter
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
Beat into the sugar mixture:
- 2 eggs
Add the fruit and nuts to the mixture. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 for 10-13 minutes.
Having Trouble Sleeping?
If you’re having trouble sleeping, try these suggestions in the evening:
- eat melatonin-rich foods such as bananas, oats, rice, sweet corn, ginger
- eat tryptophan-rich foods such as bananas, dates, figs, milk, nut butter, tuna, turkey, whole grain crackers, yogurt
- eat grapefruit
- Avoid caffeine past 2:00 in the afternoon
- Avoid alcohol – disrupts deep sleep cycles later during the night
- Avoid tobacco – nicotine is a neurostimulant and can cause sleep problems
- Avoid eating heavy meals three hours before bedtime.
- Avoid these foods late in the evening because they contain tyramine which increases the release of norepinephrine (a brain stimulant): bacon, cheese, chocolate, eggplant, ham, potatoes, sauerkraut, sugar, sausage, spinach, & tomatoes
- Exercise regularly in the late afternoon or early evening but not right before bedtime. This helps you to relax and make the body more tired so that sleep comes more easily.
- Take a hot bath an hour or two before bedtime
- Drink a cup of Sleepytime Tea (or chamomile tea)
- Keep the bedroom dark and the temperature cool
- Learn to put all worries out of your mind and concentrate on something pleasant & positive
For me, I try to do the above things. I also take two calcium citrate caplets, two magnesium malate caplets, one flax oil capsule, two 5HTPs, and sometimes one melatonin tablet. Every night, I try to eat a banana right before I go to bed. And I don’t take my worries and problems to bed with me. I pray and turn them over to God. That’s what works for me.
Platform Beds
Now that Baby J has arrived, our daughter and son-in-law decided that their extra-high bed was too high with a baby around. So what they did was to store their bed frame and box springs in the garage and get a platform frame on which to put their mattress. That works out perfectly. They are saving their original bed frame and box springs to put in a guest bedroom when they have one in the future. Then all they’ll have to buy is the mattress for the guest bed. It you’re interested in a new bed, then you might check out platform beds .
The Christmas Season is too Hectic…HELP!
Nearly all my friends agree…the month of December is just too hectic. Sometimes there is so much to do that a person can feel overwhelmed! There’s all the shopping and more shopping, setting up the Christmas tree and decorating the house, desserts and festive dishes to make for parties and dinners, endless events to attend, some last minute item to go out and shop for, Christmas cards galore to write and address (every year our list gets bigger), and then on top of all of that there’s housecleaning for company that’s coming to visit. It can be extremely overwhelming!
What helps me the most during this hectic time is a verse from the Bible in Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.” That’s it, pure and simple. Just be still…be still…be still…and know God. I pray that we can go to a quiet place, all by ourselves, and know the glory and wonder of Christmas…what Christmas is all about: the love of God shown to us when he sent his only, precious Son to this earth as a tiny baby wrapped in swaddling clothes.
Be still…and know God.
(Psalms 46 was my mother’s favorite.)

The Thrifty Scot
Insurance is something we have used many times. Several years ago, a bad storm caused two of our huge trees to fall on top of our house. Damage was done to one corner of our house which resulted in being able to walk into our daughter’s walk-in closet and see the sky. We were thankful to have insurance that took care of repairing our roof. You may have had a time when you needed home insurance and can relate to our experience. Insurance is great when you need it! Most people have had experiences where they have used their car insurance. When my father passed away, my mother was so glad that he had life insurance! Again, insurance is great when you need it. You never know when something might happen!
Ornaments Recalled
Reeves International Inc. has recalled 36,000 ornaments due to excessive amounts of lead in the surface paint, amounts that exceed the federal lead paint standards. These ornaments were manufactured in China and have been sold at retailers across the country, including the JC Penney catalog and Web site, from July 2006 through October 2007 for between $15 and $18. Below is a description of the ornaments:
- 2006 Snow Princess Stirrup Ornament is a stirrup-shaped ornament with a white prancing horse and blue ribbons. “2006” is stamped on the rim of the ornament.
- The 2007 Wintersong Stirrup Ornament is a stirrup-shaped ornament with a grey horse with saddle bags with a horn and a violin. “2007” is stamped on the rim of the ornament.
- The 2007 Photo Frame Horse Shoe Ornament is a horse shoe shaped ornament with a brown horse with rider jumping over a gate. “Happy Holiday 2007” is printed on the back of the ornament.
If you have purchased one of these ornaments, just return it to the store where purchased for a full refund, or you can contact Reeves International Inc. at (800) 444-4775 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit their Web site at www.breyerhorses.com to receive instructions for returning the ornaments.
I am especially concerned with lead amounts in paints now that we have a new grandbaby who will soon be putting everything in his mouth, and I’m so glad that people are being made aware of products that don’t meet safety standards.

Old Navy Recalls Boys’ Hooded Jackets
Old Navy has recalled over 17,000 boys’ fleece-lined, hooded jackets. The drawstring at the waist creates a potential entrapment hazard. The jackets come in blue or black, have the number 507907 on a white label in the seam of the jacket, and sold for around $30 from August-November 2007.

Also, if you need more information, you can go to the website or contact Old Navy at (866) 580-9930 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, Saturday between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET, and Sunday between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Christmas…Joy
There are several Christmas songs that have “joy” in their lyrics such as the well known song, Joy to the World. So what does this mean to me in my life? It means that I have a joy that doesn’t come from this world, a joy that can’t be taken away from me. It doesn’t come from things I own, how many clothes I have hanging in my closet,or what kind of car I drive. It comes from knowing that Christ came to this world and took my place on the cross. He was an innocent little baby when he was born in the stable and slept in the manger, and He was just as innocent when he died on the cross for my sins. I’ve been given the most awesome gift there could ever be, and that fills me with joy.
Lots of Eating During the Holidays
Well, it’s that time of year when there are so many occasions where people have a tendency to eat too much. It starts with Thanksgiving dinner, then all the Christmas parties at work, with friends, and with family. Then there’s Christmas dinner and finally a New Years Eve get-together. All of those occasions add up to a lot of extra calories for most people. I try to eat in moderation and go for walks when I can. Some people choose to diet or watch what they eat, some to exercise more, and some choose diet pills. Whatever people choose, they need to consult with their doctor and make sure they make the right choice for them.
