Bed Bug Epidemic: Be on the Watch for Bed Bugs!

I thought this was a joke when I first heard about a “bed bug epidemic,” but it is a very real problem all over the country.  Bed bugs are causing a growing problem in the Tri-Cities according to an article dated October 5, 2010.   Back during the summer in New York City, the South Street Seaport Abercrombie & Fitch store was closed because of bed bugs on July 6, 2010, for one week and was the second of their stores to close temporarily.

According to WFAA on October 4, 2010, an apartment complex had to be evacuated in Fort Worth, Texas, because of bed bugs.  A second complex might have to be evacuated as well.  Also, there was a report of bed bugs in a hotel.

The Tri-Cities article states that a great way to check if your hotel room or even your bedroom has bed bugs is to remove the sheets from the bed.  (another source says the first signs may be small red and brown spots on your sheets) Take a close look at the grooves and linings on your mattress. If you see black spots then that’s a sign of bed bugs.  Those are feeding spots from the bed bugs. You probably won’t actually see the bugs.  They suggest washing all clothes as soon as you return from a trip and even to wash the luggage.

Wikipedia has some good info on bed bugs and says that bedbugs were eliminated from developed countries in the 1940’s but have been largely on the increase since 1995, probably mainly due to greater foreign travel, but also because of the use of second-hand furniture, and the focus being on other pests and not bed bugs.  They do not cause disease, but they can cause a rash and itching.  They are being found everywhere from homes to fancy hotels, even in the fabrics of clothing at some stores (like the New York Abercrombie & Fitch stores during the summer).

You can go to BED BUG REPORTS.com to find the latest bed bug findings.  There have been 20 new reports just within the last two days!   This makes me itch just writing about this!

The Nesty Girl over at – you guessed it! – Nesty writes about pursuing a happy home and a honeyed life through simplified living! She updates her blog three times a week with recipes, creative ideas, scrapbooking projects, and stories from her day-to-day life. Her writing is charming and relatable, and, well, a lot of fun to read!

Jill (who lives in Florida) and Denise (who lives in California) are the bloggers behind Cottage Sisters. Denise is married to Jill’s brother Mike, so they’re related by marriage but are, according to them, sisters by heart. Their blog started as a way to share their homes, recipes, great books, and everything in between. You’ll find photos galore and get a taste of both coasts!

Kime’ at Adventures of the Domesticated Mama is a Christian SAHM (stay-at-home-mom) to six children. She homeschools and loves to sew, knit, crochet and bake. She hosts a lot of great reviews and giveaways and is very active in the blogging community. You’ll also see fun photos of her family for Wordless Wednesdays from time to time!

Shopping is Easy at CSN Stores

If you’ve never checked out the 200+ stores at CSN Stores then you might want to check them out and see just what all they have to offer.  They have everything from dining sets to toys & baby items to pet care items to all sorts of kitchen items and much more.

Being a preferred blogger with CSN, I was given the opportunity to review an item during the summer.  I chose a computer desk which we really like.  We received it just a few days after ordering it and were surprised at how quickly it arrived.

CSN has given me the opportunity to review another item, and I’m thrilled!  It’s hard to decide what to choose since they have so much!  I plan to look through different CSN Stores, and then I’ll let you know what I decide. Like I mentioned, they have 200+ stores so I’ll have plenty of items to choose from!

Beautiful Fall Weather!

We’ve had some really beautiful, sunny days here in north central Texas recently.  For a while there, we were having lots of rain.  We had so much rain that some people may have thought about getting a dehumidifier.  But that didn’t last too long, and now we’re just soaking up the sun and enjoying the beautiful fall weather!  This week and next week are forecast to be nice!

Menu Plan Monday 10/4/10 and Recipe for “Chicken & Spinach Pasta”

Our son came home from college for the weekend, and we had a great visit! The weekend flew by, but that’s what always happens when you’re having fun! I’m trying to think of a menu for the week, and it’s real easy to get in a rut. I’m working full-time now plus tutoring at home two afternoons a week after I get home. Plus keeping up this blog and another website. So really, cooking is the last thing I feel like doing some nights. I LOVE getting rotisserie chickens because we really like chicken and I don’t have to cook it. Just add some veggies &/or salad and supper’s a cinch!
MONDAY:  Rotisserie chicken from Wal-mart, baked potatoes (I just wash them, poke several times with a fork, and then stick them in the microwave and press “Potato”…love that feature), salad
TUESDAY:   Rotisserie Chicken Tacos with left-over rotisserie chicken, lettuce, tomato, avocado, cheese, salsa
WEDNESDAY:  Use the remaining rotisserie chicken in homemade Chicken Tortilla Soup
THURSDAY“Chicken & Spinach Pasta” – New Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2-3 cups cooked pasta (I use 2 cups either farfalle or rotini)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2-1  cup chopped onion
  • 1 10-ounce package frozen, chopped spinach, thawed and drained (OR I think fresh spinach would be even better)
  • 3 cups cubed cooked chicken breast OR canned chicken breast
  • 1 jar pasta sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

PROCEDURE:

Cook pasta.  Saute onion in olive oil.  Mix pasta, onion, spinach, chicken, pasta sauce, salt & pepper in casserole dish.  Top with cheese.  Cover and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

FRIDAY:  Left-overs from Thursday.

New Word World Episodes Start Tomorrow

Word World has new episodes starting Monday, October 4th.  These will have more advanced skills.  And they have upgraded the WordWorld “Build a Word” iPhone app and also have three new WordWorld mobile applications for Samsung’s bada platform.    Be sure and check out Toys R Us and Target for WordWorld products .

Brownies!

I don’t need the safest fat burners, but I will need to exercise more this next week.  Our son came home from college for the weekend, and we’ve been having brownies.  Not just plain brownies mind you, but brownies topped with cooked fudge frosting, a large scoop of Dreyer’s Slow Churned Rich and Creamy Vanilla Yogurt (low-fat with actual yogurt cultures) and then strawberries on top.  At least the strawberries are healthy and the yogurt is somewhat healthy!
