Around the House

Being a school teacher makes it hard to do “spring cleaning” around the house, so I usually end up doing that during the summer.  I have a whole list of things I want to do such as cleaning out all four walk-in closets, cleaning out drawers, organizing my kitchen better (probably should check out knives and see if I need blade sharpening), and giving away a bunch of things to a thrift store that benefits a children’s home.   I’ve already done a little “summer cleaning” such as cleaning windows, but I have a long way to go on my list.  Summers always fly by, so I plan to seriously start working on my list this next week.

Chair Cushions

When we go on long trips, I take my memory foam chair cushion.  This really helps my lower back on a long road trip.  This type of chair cushion is also good for elderly people who sit a lot, maybe all day.

Now that I’m thinking about comfortable chair cushions, wouldn’t these type of chair cushions be wonderful to use in the kitchen at the breakfast table.  They could be covered with cute cushion covers, ones that could easily be removed for washing.  The problem with that, though, is that the chairs would be so comfortable that people might not want to leave the table but keep sitting there longer instead.

Monical’s Pizza, One of Our Favorites!

We have a family tradition when we go visit my mother-in-law, and that’s to take a day trip and travel to Arthur to see the Amish buggies on the road and visit the little downtown section (and I do mean little).  We also have a tradition to eat at Monical’s Pizza.  Yum!  They have one of the most delicious super thin, crispy crusts I have ever tasted.

Repairs

My husband is so good at fixing things around the house!   Once, he repaired our washing machine by getting some appliance repair parts.  He’s repaired and replaced faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms, plus he installed an Insinkerator Garbage Disposal.  When we were at my mother-in-law’s house recently, he repaired the plumbing under her kitchen sink.  All of a sudden, we were without hot water in the kitchen, and hot water is a necessity in the kitchen.  We were so thankful he knew how to work on the plumbing!

Impressive Steel Buildings

When I think of a steel building, I think of storage buildings or maybe a detached garage for an RV or something like that.  However, I was looking through a site and saw steel school buildings.  Each classroom is a separate building, and they look more like portable buildings all lined up in a row touching each other.  My first thought was what is so good about that, but then I read more information.   These buildings are designed by the best engineers in the U.S., are fire resistant, and are built to withstand the harshest weather conditions which includes tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes.   Sounds like they would be good for parts of the country which are in “tornado alley.”

Creams and Moisturizers

Sometimes my skin gets so dry from the summer heat, especially my feet when I wear flip flops a lot .  Maybe I need something like seaweed cream to really moisturize my skin with some nourishing ingredients.  I look for things like Shea Butter and Aloe Vera in lotions and moisturizers a lot of times when I’m buying something to combat dry skin.  Anything that will help battle the effects of this Texas heat!

Free Online Book for Travel: Pride and Prejudice

For those of you who like to listen to books while traveling, I found a site that has free online audio books.  Looking through their list, I already see one that would be interesting to me, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice which is the most famous of her novels.

I read the book several years ago and have the movie on DVD (the long version starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle).  It’s such a great story!  (Actually, our daughter and s-i-l gave me the movie years ago for Christmas, and Christi and I stayed up late watching the movie.  It was that good!)  I imagine the audio book would recreate flashbacks of the movie for me, and it’s good to know about this site in case I’m ever in the mood to listen to the book online.

Menu Plan Monday 6/11/12

Hope everyone is having a great start to their summer.  I am finally starting summer break and am thrilled.  I just finished a whole week (actually four full days) of technology training for teachers, and my brain is “fried.”  The presenters presented so much information so fast throughout the week.  It was great info, but it would have been nice to have it at a slower pace. I must say our presenters did a great job!

So, here’s our menu for the week:
.
Monday: Chicken, Stir-fry veggie medley of squash (yellow & zucchini), okra, and onions in EVOO

TuesdayBaja Fish Tacos

Wednesday:  Hamburgers & fries

Thursday:  Carry-out from ?
Friday: Pizza & salad

Song Share: “10,000 Reasons” & “Blessed Be Your Name”

I love this new song, “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord, Oh My Soul”) by Matt Redman.   The popular songs “Blessed Be Your Name” and “You Never Let Go” were also written by Redman and his wife, and these songs have been such a source of comfort and encouragement to thousands of people all over the world. Many well-known contemporary Christian music artists have sung quite a few of his songs, by the way.  If you listen to “10,000 Reasons,” I hope your heart is touched like mine is every time I hear this song.

Dream Cabin with Deck

Colorado has always been my very favorite place to visit since I was a young girl.  What would be a dream of mine would be to live up in Colorado during the summer months in a nice cabin with a porch or deck with rustic outdoor furniture and a beautiful view of the mountains, a complete kitchen (dishwasher included), complete bathroom (absolutely no out-house), and nice neighbors.  I would love to get up every morning and sit on the deck while drinking a cup of tea and looking at the gorgeous scenery.  I guess I’ll just have to keep on dreaming!
