How to Read Labels for Organic Products

The USDA has three categories of organic products:

  1. “100% Organic” means that the product is made with 100% organic ingredients.
  2. “Organic” means that the product is made with at least 95% organic ingredients.  The remaining 5% cannot contain any GMO’s.
  3. “Made With Organic Ingredients” means that the product is made with a minimum of 70% organic ingredients.  The remaining 30% cannot contain any GMO’s.

If the product contains less than 70% organic ingredients, then they may list each organic ingredient in the Ingredients List on the side of the package.  However, the product may not have “Organic” on the front of their packaging.

I like the wide-screen computer monitors that are out these days.  They are so much better than the huge, bulky monitors that most people had ten years ago.  These desktops take up less space and utilize space effeciently.  No longer do you have to have a big desk to accommodate a computer, but with today’s desktop you can have a nice, compact desk if not much space is available.

End of Summer Party

There’s still time for an end of summer party, and what better way to invite friends to your party than with cute party invitations that are creative and not your usual store bought invitations. I liked these casual invitations because of the colors, and the flip flops reveal the casual nature of the party.  I would imagine that most of the guests might even wear flip flops to the party.

My Mother-in-Law’s Salad Dressing (Sugar-free)

While visiting my mother-in-law this summer, she made a delicious salad dressing using four ingredients plus she had finely chopped onion in the salad which added to the flavor.  So really I guess it should be five ingredients since the onion plays an important part.  Mix the ingredients lightly and pour on the salad.  (My mother-in-law put each ingredient on top of the salad separately and then tossed the salad lightly.)

Here are the four ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 packets Splenda ( but I replaced it with Stevia)
  • Morton’s “Nature’s Seasons” Seasoning Blend to taste

Four Foods On Friday 85

“This week I’m changing it up a bit. I’m challenging players to create a meal or share a recipe that uses four ingredients – olive oil, chicken, cheese (any type) and a vegetable.”

Four Foods on Friday is in a different format now.  So here’s my recipe for Chicken, Rice, Broccoli & Cheese Casserole:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large can chicken breast
  • 1 can 98% fat free cream of chicken soup
  • frozen broccoli
  • 1 cup sharp shredded cheese
  • freshly ground salt & pepper

Cook brown rice in water and olive oil according to directions on the package.  As soon as it’s done, add the chicken and soup.  Stir.  Add just a little more water if necessary.  Stir in 1/2 cup cheese.  Place the frozen broccoli on top (break it apart) and top with remaining 1/2 cup cheese.  Place the lid back on top of the pan and cook on medium low for 15-20 minutes until broccoli is tender. (or you can bake in oven at 350 degrees – it’s just too hot here in Texas to heat the oven…LOL)  Add salt and pepper to taste.

Do You Have an Ipod?

So many people have ipods today. I don’t have one, but I know a lot of people that do. It’s amazing how many songs they can hold, how they have an audio player, a video player, and a photo viewer.   I saw one ipod that holds 40,000 songs.  (I don’t even know 40,000 songs!  I can’t imagine having that many.)  And they come in posh colors as well as basic black.  How stylish!
