The Dead Sea Scrolls

I’ve been hearing on the radio how the Dead Sea Scrolls are available for viewing in the Metroplex.  It would be very interesting to go see them!  The Dead Sea Scrolls contain Isaiah (a book of the Bible in the Old Testament) which was written approximately 597-538 BC.  It’s fascinating to me that ancient writings of God’s Word were preserved for centuries in the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.  Here’s just one verse from Isaiah:

Isaiah 40:22:  God sits on his throne above the circle of the earth, and compared to him, people are like grasshoppers.  The world was thought to be flat until the 1400’s, but nearly two thousand years before that, the prophet of God named Isaiah (inspired by God) wrote about the circle of the earth, and God preserved the writings of Isaiah in the caves.  Amazing!

Comfy Mattress

There’s nothing like having a comfortable, cozy mattress to sleep on every night.  Whenever we’re away from home, it’s always nice to be back, sleeping in our own soft memory foam bed.  Wherever you are, I hope you have a good mattress whether it’s from mattress stores los angeles or wherever.  The quality of sleep we get makes a difference in how we feel the next day.  Good sleep helps our minds be alert for the work we have to do during the day, so do not underestimate the value of a good mattress and a good night’s sleep!

Cooking for a Crowd: Chicken Pot Pie Recipe

Here’s a good recipe (Julie’s recipe) if you ever need to feed a large group of people.  One pan feeds around eight people, so multiply the ingredients by how many pans you think you need.  We were serving families at the Ronald McDonald House so our team made 10 pans.  We needed enough to feed around 75 people, so that gave us 80 adult-size servings.  I’ll give you quantities for a single pan & you can multiply by however many pans you need.  When making multiple pans, mix one pan at a time to ensure proper amount of ingredients in each pan..

.t

INGREDIENTS FOR ONE POT PIE.  WHEN MAKING SEVERAL PANS, MULTIPLY BY HOW MANY PANS YOU NEED.  HOWEVER, MIX ONE PAN AT A TIME TO ENSURE THE SAME AMOUNT OF INGREDIENTS IN EACH PAN:

  • 3 to 4 large chicken breasts, cooked & chopped
  • 2  16 ounce bags frozen mixed vegetables, thawed & thoroughly drained
  • 2 cans of cream of celery soup
  • 1 ½ cups chicken broth
  • ½ t pepper

INGREDIENTS FOR CRUST:

  • 1 1/3 cup self rising flour
  • 1 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/3 cups melted butter

Mix pot pie ingredients & pour into 9 x13 pan.  Mix crust ingredients thoroughly & drop on top of chicken mixture by spoonfuls.  Gently spread to cover entire dish. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes until the crust is golden brown.  Let stand 10 minutes before serving.  Serve with salad.

.* Reminder:  When making multiple pans, mix one pan at a time to ensure proper amount of ingredients in each pan.

.Add fruit and desserts for a complete meal. We bought two large Artisan Fresh Lemon Crunch Bundt Cakes (50 oz. each) and two large Artisan Fresh Chocolate Bundt Cakes at Sam’s Club, along with a large package of frozen strawberries for our desserts.

Menu Plan Monday & Simple Recipe for Gorgonzola Dolce Cheese & Fresh Pears

Thanks to Central Market for this idea: top a slice of fresh pear with a thin slice of Gorgonzola Dolce Cheese for a tasty snack. I really didn’t think I’d like this combination but I was wrong and think it’s so yummy! We added some Rosemary & Olive Oil Triscuits on the side for a delicious light meal.

Note: I tried putting the pear and cheese on the Triscuit but prefer to have them separately. You might like the flavor combination of all three, though.

Musicians!

Do you have any musicians in your house? If so, then you might know about those who want to buy ibanez effects pedals for their band or for their own enjoyment.  During the years we’ve been married, which total 30 something, we’ve had several guitars, amps, effects pedals plus a violin and even a banjo.  The banjo has barely been used, but the guitar and violin are used almost weekly.  Plus if you add in our son’s electric keyboard and my piano, there’s no doubt that musicians live in this house!

Rustic Furniture

When we are traveling through Springfield, Missouri, we like to stop at a couple of places in town.  One of the places we like to go to is the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World.  It’s entertaining just to walk through this huge multi-level store.  They have everything from a section with rustic decor, which would be great to have in a cabin in your favorite location (Colorado for us), to children’s clothing.  It’s an amazing store!  (The other place we always like to stop at is Andy’s Frozen Custard…yum!!)

Menu Plan Monday 9/10/12

Exciting news: Our new granddaughter was born this past week!!  She is baby sister to her older brothers J (age 5) and C (age 3).  This is such an exciting time in our lives.  Babies are truly a blessing from God, and we feel very blessed to have three precious grandchildren!

School is coming along.  Still soooo much to do to finally feel caught up.  Love my students and that makes it all worth it.  The only thing is that I have gained weight since school started three weeks ago.  Not a good thing.  I feel like I’ve gained three or four pounds.  So, we need to start eating really healthy and cut out some desserts.

Here’s a recipe we won’t be having this week because of the heavy whipping cream in it, but it sounds very delicious and worth sharing:

If you make it, let me know how you like it.  Here’s our menu for the week with no heavy whipping cream!!
.
Monday:  Chicken, corn, Organic Mixed Spinach & Spring Mix Salad

TuesdaySalmon Patties, salad, baby carrots ……………………

Wednesday: Marinated Chicken Breasts from Food Network (grill on stove top), green beans & onions, salad

Thursday: Rotisserie Chicken, zucchini, salad

FridayFreschetta’s Simply Inspired “Farmers Market Veggie” Pizza   (thin crust – lower carbs), salad

Knobs & Handles

Do the cabinets and drawers in your kitchen have handles or knobs, or neither?  Ours have neither.  Sometimes I think about putting some on, or I should say having my husband put them on for me.  I would want something fancier than aluminum angle pull handles, although those are great for a small space that needs a better grip.  I look at knobs and handles when we go to a hardware store sometimes but haven’t decided on any.  The fact is that I’m so busy with school that knobs and handles are at the bottom of my to do list.

Ordering Online

Times have changed, and so many people order online nowadays.  I’ve ordered several things this summer, including shoes and vitamins.  The items are always well packaged, so well packaged sometimes that a retractable knife would come in handy.

It’s amazing how many things you can order online these days.  Actually, you can order just about everything: furniture, mattresses, cars, groceries, diapers, medicines, and the list goes on and on.  With the busy lives people live nowadays, ordering online is a real time saver!
