Remodeling

Someday, I want to remodel our hall bathroom.  We replaced the flooring several years ago and it still looks great.  I really like the large mirrors in our bathrooms, however, I like an idea that our daughter, Christi from Frugal Novice, has for the hall bathroom mirror which is to put molding all around the it.  They did that in one of their bathrooms, and it looks great!   I also want to replace the lighting above the mirror with something similar to the lightning in this picture, so I might look at Kichler lighting and other places to see where we could get the best price.  And I’d like to paint the cabinets and take down the wallpaper.  Hmmm….that’s a lot, expecially taking down the wallpaper which is on every wall.  That would require refinishing or priming the walls so we could paint them.  Whenever we do remodel, I think we’ll do it a little at a time!

Window Treatments

Window Treatments really do add a lot to a room whether it’s wood blinds, curtains, or a combination of pretty shades with sheer curtains.  Our daughter put up some cute curtains a while back, and when I entered the room I noticed them and thought how cute they were.  We have the same window treatments that we’ve had for several years now, and I think if I ever decide to update then window treatments will be high on my list.

Giveaway: $60 Gift Card to CSN Stores

Our bed has a bookcase style headboard, and I’ve thought that if we ever decide to get a different headboard then I would want to get a different style. We have a memory foam mattress that we bought years ago.  It’s a really great mattress and even though we have box springs, a platform bed might work just as well and provide a new headboard.   I like the clean lines of this headboard pictured from CSN’s bedroom furniture.

If you’ve never been to CSN online, they have over 200 stores from which to choose.  I must admit I spent some time looking at their bakeware, and there are so many other categories to look at as well.  The great thing is that CSN has provided me with a gift card to give away, and the winner gets to use it on whatever they choose from any of CSN’s 200+ online stores.

Here are some examples of things I found in bakeware from Le Creuset and Rachael Ray:

Patio Furniture

It would be nice to have some new patio furniture to put out on our deck.  We used to have some but it’s worn out and long gone.  If I were going to choose some, I’d choose either a comfy chair with ottoman or a chaise lounge.  And beside it I would put a table so there would be a place to set a nice, cold glass of fresh made iced tea with lemon wedges.   Then I would choose a couple of glider rockers and another table or two.  Add in a patio dining set, and that would be really nice!

Faux Wood Blinds

If we could afford it, I would like to have faux wood blinds on our living room windows.  We have two really huge windows side-by-side which are great because we can look out into our backyard.  We have crepe myrtle trees, cannas, and some potted plants on the deck, and it’s really pretty when everything is blooming.  But we can’t afford new blinds now, even with a 40% off sale.  Hmmm…maybe someday!

Things I Love Thursday: “Antique Broom Closet” Pantry

One thing that my kitchen didn’t have that I really wanted was a pantry or an abundance of storage space.  I looked several different places such as Pier One, Target, Walmart, and other places.  All of the cabinets I found were too wide for the space.  I was so excited when I found this antique broom closet at an antique mall.  It was just the right width, was unique because it was an actual broom closet, and caught my attention as soon as I saw it. I knew that it was what I wanted! It was the perfect fit for what we needed.

It had small ledges on the inside walls, and I discovered that a cookie sheet turned upside down would fit on those small ledges to make a strong shelve that would easily support the weight put on top of  it.  I bought two more cookie sheets so that my “pantry” would have three shelves.  And if I ever decide to actually use this as a broom closet, I can easily take out the cookie sheets in just a few seconds.  It has quite an assortment of things in it as you can tell and ended up being a place to put things I didn’t have room for instead of being an actual pantry.  Someday I plan to reorganize (and update our kitchen but I still want to keep the broom closet).

Here’s another picture that I like that shows the authenticity of the broom closet.  It’s the actual company plate at the top of the cabinet.

Like I mentioned, someday I want to update our kitchen but still keep the broom closet.  So far, all we’ve done is to replace our microwave.  At least that’s one step in redoing our kitchen.  And you know what?  At this point in my life, that is at the bottom of my priority list.  With all of the poor people suffering in Haiti and other places, I’m  thankful to have a kitchen that has everything I need.  What a blessing!

Here’s one more picture from a couple of years ago showing the entire broom closet from top to bottom. I took down the wallpaper border soon after that.  (You can barely see the microwave, our only update so far.)

Musical Doorbells and Ringtones

When I was growing up, if the doorbell rang then it was a typical, standard doorbell sound.  The same with our phone.  If the phone rang then it was the typical, standard ring.  Today, however, people don’t have the typical sounds anymore.  In fact, the old sounds that I grew up with are considered “retro” and are popular with some people.  Many people, however,  like  musical notification that someone is at the door or that their phone is ringing.  There’s not a “typical” doorbell or ringtone sound in today’s world.

Covers for Throw Pillows

2nd-sd-card-breakfast-basket-touch-of-red-mac-grill-2-17-09-004If you’re wanting new throw pillows but don’t want to spend the money to buy new ones, then you might consider buying square pillow covers.  I found some really nice red pillow covers on sale for half price at Pottery Barn a while back.  They have a full zipper on one edge, making it easy to put them on the pillow.  It’s easy to find them online, too.  Just make sure you measure the pillow first.

A New Office

Do you ever sit and wonder, “What would it be like if…”   I’m wondering what it would be like to have a separate room for a new office and have some modern furniture in there. And while I’m dreaming, wouldn’t if be nice to have a brand new computer that never crashed or had to be restarted every day, sometimes several times a day.   I think that would be really nice!

Bathroom Remodeling

Someday, I would like to remodel our bathroom.  Our daughter has given me some great ideas!   I don’t know if we would replace the bathroom lights or not.  But it would be nice to take off all of the wall paper (there’s a lot of wall paper!) and paint/texture the walls, sand the cabinets (this would be a big job) and paint them.  I like our flooring, so that wouldn’t need to be replaced.  So…maybe someday!

Found a Great Bathroom Cleaner…And It’s Non-Toxic

Target is one of my favorite places to shop (my daughter knows that – it’s one of her favorites, too) and while I was going down the cleaning products aisle I noticed this tub ‘n tile bathroom cleaner that said “Method” on the front of the bottle.  What caught my attention on the label were two things:

  • “Non-Toxic”
  • “No Harsh Fumes”

I had been using another cleaner with such horrible fumes that I had to leave the bathroom.  One time my college-age son asked me what it was that smelled so bad.  That’s how bad it was.  The fumes made me wonder what toxic chemicals were in the cleaner.  So…I was thrilled when I saw this cleaner at Target.  We tried it and think it’s GREAT!  My husband really likes it, too, and is using it to clean a bunch of things.  It’s awesome because:

  • Smells great!
  • Does an awesome job of cleaning!
  • We don’t have to worry about toxins!
  • It’s biodegradable!
  • Cleaners are plant-derived!

Plus…when I first bought it, it happened to have a coupon on it.  I like to use coupons and save money when I can, so I thought I’d give the product a try since it had a coupon.  Now, we’re sold on that product and want to try more Method brand products.   And guess what!  I found another Method coupon!!
