Taking Music Lessons

We are a family with several musicians.  My husband took violin lessons starting at age eight and then taught himself to play guitar in college.  He actually makes money entertaining playing the guitar and singing, he’s that good.  Our son took lessons (and was in school band for eight years) and plays just about any type of percussion instrument but mainly steel drums now.  He did play the marimba in high school (very well, I might add, to the extent that playing his UIL solo at a college try-out earned him a several thousand dollar scholarship).

If someone was interested in taking lessons but didn’t have much time or wanted to learn at their own pace, there are beginner guitar lessons available online.  Violin lessons would need to be in person, though, because how one holds the instrument is very important as well as technique.  I’ve seen online drum lessons but not online marimba lessons.  Before anyone considers music lessons for themselves or their child, though, they need to remember that the desire to play and the commitment it takes are very important aspects of learning to play an instrument.

Menu Plan Monday 1/30/12

We are in Texas and having spring-like weather in the middle of winter (that’s called “Texas weather”).  As much as I’m enjoying not being freezing cold, I wish we would get some winter weather with snow so school would be cancelled for a day (I sound just like the students)!   It would be nice to have another day to rest and fight off whatever this is that I’m trying to come down with.  One thing hard about being a teacher is being around so many sick germs!  Oh well, the weather forecast looks like more spring-like weather this week…no snow!

Jeans, Professional Attire, or Uniforms?

As a school teacher, I don’t have to wear a uniform or any specific type of clothing.  But we are expected to dress professionally and not wear anything denim except on certain Fridays.   One of my friends, however, has to wear nurses uniforms.  Another friend is an accountant, and since she goes into the warehouse to check inventory at times, she can wear jeans (at least on those days).  Some people do get to wear jeans to work as long as they’re nice jeans and they wear a professional looking top.  I always look forward to the Fridays that we get to wear jeans and so do nearly all of the staff I work with.   If you work outside your home, what type of clothing do you wear to work?

Recipe: Red Pepper Taffy for Sore Throats

This is a recipe from Prevention Magazine and is an easy-to-make taffy candy that is supposed to be great for sore throats.  The recipe was provided by Linda Bartoshuk, professor at Yale University School of Medicine.

.
INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter flavor
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Combine sugar, corn syrup, water, cornstarch, butter, and salt.  Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it reaches 256 degrees F on a candy thermometer (or until a small amount of mixture dropped into some cold water forms a hard ball).  Remove from heat and stir in butter flavoring and cayenne pepper.  Pour onto a baking sheet.  When it’s cool enough to handle, pull the taffy until it has a satin feel, is light in color, and is stiff.  It it’s too sticky, butter both hands lightly and pull the taffy into long strips, 1/2 inch wide.  Cut with kitchen scissors into 1-inch pieces.  Wrap each piece separately with plastic wrap.  Makes about 30 pieces.

Basements

Basements are rare here in Texas.  I’ve seen a few, but I could probably count them on one hand.  Where my m-i-l lives, however, a lot of people have basements.  Hers is really nice and has basement floor tiles, finished walls, and a ceiling.  It’s quite large and includes a separate bedroom and a 3/4 bathroom.  Plus, it has a pool table, a couple of sofas, a chair, and a full-size fridge as well as her laundry room area.  We slept downstairs for many years when we would visit because we had plenty of space for kids plus a dog.  It’s a great basement for company to stay in because there’s so much room!

Bioidentical Homones

Women and hormones!  What a time we women have dealing with all the ups and downs of our hormones. Hormone replacement therapy is used sometimes to provide relief from the symptoms of PMS, perimenopause, and menopause.  I must admit that I am very skeptical of synthetic hormones and also most types of estrogen.  My doctor, however, prescribes natural bioidentical progesterone and estriol (the good estrogen that may even help guard against breast and uterine cancers), and it’s compounded especially for me.  The bad part is that my insurance won’t cover it, but the good part is that I feel safe taking it and can definitely tell a huge difference when I’m not using my hormone cream.

Seaweed

Do you know how healthy seaweed is? Very healthy! I take seaweed tablets, actually “kelp” which is large seaweed, just about every day. Kelp grows in nutrient-rich waters and is loaded with these rich nutrients, like the B-vitamins, natural iodine, and minerals for example.  It’s evident that Kelp is great for most people needing to supplement minerals in their diet.

There are also seaweed products available such as creams, shampoos, conditioners, and bath products. Some people use these products to help skin problems such as flaking or scaling.  Whether taking kelp tablets or using these products, there seem to be several benefits from using seaweed.

Gardening

Someday, I want to start a small organic garden. Ages ago before we had kids, we had two tomato plants that produced an enormous amount of the most delicious tasting tomatoes. A few years ago, however, when I tried container gardening on our deck, animals would come during the night and take bites out of our green tomatoes. That was so frustrating!

Whenever we do have a garden in the future, I would like to have a compost tumbler because I’ve read about how great they are. And I definitely want to have some protection around all of the plants to keep hungry critters from ruining our produce!

Menu Plan Monday 1/23/12

Trying to eat healthy is still the theme in our kitchen but somehow dark chocolate and pumpkin bread happen to be sitting on our counter right now. Hmmm….at least there is a health benefit with the antioxidants in dark chocolate and the beta carotene in pumpkin. Right?
.
I’m trying hard not to have fried foods often at all.   The main fried food we have is salmon patties, but how can you make salmon patties without frying them?

Before I go on with our menu for the week, I must apologize for a few dead links in my last two Menu Plan Mondays.  I have been so busy at work packing up everything in my classroom, moving into a brand new wing at school, unpacking, and setting up a classroom.  I’ve been in a hurry and haven’t tested all my links like I usually do, so here are working links to all my recipes from the last two weeks:.

MondayLow-Cal Fettuccine Alfredo (new recipe from Food Network), chicken, salad
…..
Tuesday:  Leftovers

Wednesday Tuscan Glazed Chicken (use light mayo), veggies

Thursday: Salmon patties, corn, green beans

Friday: Chicken Parmesan Rollatini from “Food Network,” green beans, salad

Olive Oil Oatmeal Cookies

Even when a person is trying to lose weight, it’s good to have little treats or rewards along the way.  Here’s a healthy cookie with fiber and nutrition that makes a nice treat:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unbleached flour (or whole wheat flour)
  • 1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats (can use instant)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar  (or 3/8 cup brown sugar & 2 KAL spoonfuls of  KAL Stevia Powder)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup walnuts

Cream together the olive oil, butter and brown sugar.  Blend in the egg and applesauce.  In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.  Add to the creamed mixture.  Blend well.  Mix in the vanilla.  Add the oats, raisins, and walnuts.  Drop by spoonfuls on baking sheet.  Bake at 350 degrees for 9-12 minutes.

Musicians in our Family

My husband is talented when it comes to music!  He plays the guitar and has even played a 12 string guitar before.   Right now, he has two guitars and a banjo tucked away in a closet somewhere that he played occasionally years ago.  Actually, he used the banjo mostly for a few music lessons and mainly taught guitar and violin lessons.  Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that he plays the violin.  The violin was his first instrument which he started playing when he was eight years old.  In fact, he is still playing on the same violin (the sound is beautiful) and plays in a local orchestra.

Our son is in college and has played in a school band for nine years, and he’s now playing in a steel drum ensemble group.  He is talented, too, and has won UIL State Music Awards in the past.  When he’s home, our son likes to play the piano in our living room (used to be my piano when I was growing up).  One advantage to having musicians in the family is that I get to listen to great music at home and at concerts!

It’s Still National Oatmeal Month

I haven’t forgotten! And I still intend to share a recipe or two with you using oatmeal. The past two weeks have been crazy at work. We have been packing up our whole classroom and moving to a brand new wing which is exciting. We have all brand new technology (SMART Board, Document Camera, iPad, Flip Camera, Computer Podium with the monitor on a swivel arm) which is pretty cool! However…this has all been very, very time consuming as I’m sure some of you can imagine who’ve been there. So, don’t give up! I hope to post a recipe soon or at least by this weekend.
