The W.H. Stark House in Orange, Texas
I love to visit historical sites, especially houses where people lived. It’s like taking a step back in time! I try to imagine what it would have been like to live in that era and try to learn about the lives of people who lived in those houses.
The W.H. Stark House is a great example of a beautiful, historical house built in 1894. Designated as a National Historic Landmark and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission, this 15-room Victorian mansion is located in Orange, Texas, and has been a community landmark and point of interest for many visitors through the years.
Now let me introduce you to the family who built the house:
- William Henry Stark was born in 1851. After a long courtship, he married Miriam Lutcher in 1881. He became a prominent businessman and philanthropist in the Orange, Texas, area. He died in 1936.
- Miriam Melissa Lutcher Stark was born in 1859. After marrying William Stark, they had two children. Frances Ann, however, died as a young child, so Lutcher became their only living child. Miriam was a collector and donated much of her collection to UT in Austin. This included works by Byron, a page from the Gutenberg Bible (circa 1456), and a first issue of the King James Bible dated 1611. She died in 1936, shortly after the death of her husband.
- Henry Jacob Lutcher Stark was born in 1887 to W.H. and Miriam. Later in his life, he established a private foundation to improve the quality of life in Southeast Texas, including education, the arts, and health and human services.
When I read about this family, it sounds like a family who cared about other people. They had a tragedy in their life, the death of their young daughter, but they didn’t let that keep them from being a productive and helpful family.
Visit the W.H. Stark House website to learn more about this beautiful house and family.
Tours are available Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Admission is limited to individuals who are ages 10 years and older. Part of the tour includes stairs.
Consider the city of Orange, Texas, for your travel plans, a city that has a lot to offer!

Emerging Markets Consulting
Emerging Markets Consulting has the highest ratio of research hours in the stock market industry. They spend time gathering, updating and verifying data so they can provide extraordinary service and measurable results. This is important for those dealing with penny stocks or for anyone wanting accurate information.
These are some tips they offer on How to Buy a Company Stock:
- Research companies first before you invest in them.
- Be wary where you get your stock tips.
- Buy into companies that you trust.
Some Guidelines For Buying Walking Shoes
If you have problems with your feet when you go for walks, you might consider these guidelines:
- My doctor said to buy running shoes because they have better support than walking shoes. Even though I haven’t been running in years, I still buy running shoes.
- My doctor also said to replace my shoes every six months. The support in the shoe breaks down even though the shoe may look great on the outside. I over-pronate on my left foot and break down the support on the inside under the ball of my foot. (I didn’t buy new shoes when I was supposed to this last time, and I started having foot and ankle problems. As soon as I bought new shoes, the problem went away.)
- If you over-pronate, check out New Balance shoes. They are great for that problem!
- I always buy running shoes that are a whole size larger than my regular shoes. I normally wear a 7 1/2, but I buy a size 8 1/2 for running shoes.
My running shoes are so comfortable for walking that I wish I could wear them all the time!
Hopefully…
A lot of people probably know of someone who has trouble with alcohol. It may be someone at work, at school, a neighbor, a relative, or an acquaintance. The sad thing about alcohol addiction is that it ruins so many lives. Hopefully, that person will get help somewhere and maybe go to alcohol rehab.
When I taught school before, we had a unit on “Say No To Drugs!” One lesson in that unit was about alcohol, because alcohol is a type of drug. It can really mess a person up when they become addicted to it! Maybe that made an impression on some of those kids and maybe kept a few of them from becoming addicted to alcohol! Hopefully!!
5 Pounds in 5 Weeks, Week 4
Well, I lost 1/2 pound this past week which is better than the week before. I’m half way to my goal which means I’ll need to add on another couple of weeks time-wise, depending on how I do this week. I had problems with my foot and couldn’t walk as much last week. I think walking is a big factor for me.
I bought new running shoes last Friday, so that has alleviated my foot problem. I’m supposed to buy new running shoes every six months (doctor recommendation). I found the receipt for my old shoes, and it had been way over a year since I bought them…Woops! No wonder I was having so many problems with my foot and ankle!
Massage Therapy is Great for Everyone!
Everyone can benefit from massage therapy. Here are a few examples:
- Anyone who has aching muscles, including fibromyalgia, benefits from massage therapy. I have been to massage therapists for massages in the past, and it was wonderful! My favorite type of massage was the deep tissue massage which really helped me the most. In fact, I found one lady who did deep tissue massage, and she was the only one I would go to.
- Even pregnant women can have massages. When our daughter was pregnant last year, she went for a prenatal massage and thought it was very relaxing.
- Massages are great, too, for someone under stress. It helps relieve tension.
If you’ve never had a massage, I highly recommend one!
A “Wow” Post
Every once in a while I read a post, and when I’m through…all I can say is, “Wow!” This is one of those posts for me: What Cancer Can’t Do, from Wanda at Apples-Zeros. We get so tied up in the busy, hectic lives we live that often we don’t take time to stop and think about what truly matters in our lives!
Our Identity Has Been Stolen Twice
LifeLock is the industry leader in the field of Identity Theft Protection. Identity theft tops the Federal Trade Commission’s complaint list and has done so for the past seven years, so companies such as life lock are in a rapidly growing field. I believe it! We’ve had our identity stolen twice within the past few years on two different credit card accounts. Our son-in-law had the same experience on one of his credit cards. People have to be extra-careful nowadays, and it’s great there is a company like LifeLock that wants to secure your identity and guarantee your good name!
This is Why
This was my comment on Zero and Up on The “Why” Behind a Few Blogs:
I had help choosing my name, “Healthy Home Blog,” but it really fits me. I’m trying more and more to make healthy choices in eating & lifestyle because I believe that so many health problems, from major issues all the way to PMS, are affected by the choices we make. And I love taking care of my family (it works both ways, we help each other), so the home part fits like a glove. I hope that things I’ve learned along the way can benefit some people, and I like learning things from other bloggers, too.
It’s interesting reading other people’s comments on that post!
Vista Print Has Business Cards, Gifts, & Much More
Vista Print has so much to offer for every printing need. They not only have business cards but also checks, rubber stamps, announcements, and car magnets. All of their products can be customized! This feature adds that special touch to any product.
Vista Print also carries gift items which would be great for Mother’s Day which is just around the corner. Here are some gift ideas which I think any mother, grandmother, or aunt would like:

Their return address stickers with the customized family caricatures, including pets, are not only useful but also attractive. Our daughter has some like these and they are adorable! They also have a large number of design templates to choose from or you can create a custom design.
This notepad is not only cute but also great to write notes to a child’s teacher. This would be especially good when students have to change classes and a teacher might have a large number of students.
This would make a lovely gift for a mother, grandmother, or aunt. Who wouldn’t enjoy a calendar customized with pictures of loved ones!
These customized note cards would be great for writing notes, for thank-you notes, or even for invitations to friend & family get-togethers.
