Recently, I’ve seen billboards reminding drivers to watch out for motorcyclists on the road. Unfortunately, the motorcyclist death-rate has risen over the past few years. I’ve seen tips for being a safer motorcyclist which include wearing a helmet and other safety gear such as gloves, joe rocket gloves for example. Other tips include driving defensively, turning on headlights, and wearing brightly colored clothing. One tip even suggested not driving in the very center of the lane, my guess is because they would be in the blind spot of another driver. Another tip that is good for all drivers everywhere is to avoid distractions!

Insurance Types
I was thinking about all the different types of insurance such as homeowners, health, auto, life, and liability insurance. Being curious about how many types of actual insurance are available for different things, I did a search and found some info on wiki. I could not get over how many different types there are. Some are rather comical, I must admit, especially in the “A” and “Z” alphabetical listings. But there are some types that I never even thought about having that make sense. I guess there’s insurance available for just about everyone’s needs.
Map of Time Zones
If you ever need a map of time zones, here is a good map that not only gives the different zones but also the time and date in each zone. It’s especially good for those who are traveling to Hawaii. It’s been a while since we went to Hawaii with our family after our daughter graduated from high school, but I can remember trying to figure out the time difference. For example, looking at this map I can see that Hawaii is five hours behind us here in Central Mountain Time. I’m a visual learner, so it helps me remember to look at an actual map.
Tempurpedic Mattresses
We love our king-sized Tempurpedic mattress which we’ve had for eleven years now. Before that, we had two different regular mattresses, and a very long time ago before that, we had a waterbed. All of these beds were king-sized, too, but the Tempurpedic is by far the best mattress we have ever owned. It definitely helps our backs having such a wonderful mattress to sleep on at night.
One thing, though, about having such a good mattress to sleep on every night is that we miss it when we’re traveling. If we stay at a motel or hotel, which always have a firmer mattress, we can really tell a difference. Earlier this year we traveled to see our family. The place we stayed at had such a very firm mattress that I woke up feeling so stiff the next morning. It took me at least an hour or longer to loosen up and not feel stiff anymore. I was so glad to sleep on our own mattress after we got back home, and the next morning my back felt so much better when I woke up. It makes a huge difference what type of mattress we sleep on at night, and we believe it’s been worth the investment to have better quality sleep and healthier backs.

Band Memories
Our son has been in band since sixth grade, and now he’s going to be a senior in college. For many years, we heard things like our son saying, “I need new drumsticks” or another band member might say, “I need Vandoren Reeds.” The high school years were so busy with before school practices, after school practices, football games, parades, and many competitions in the fall. Once our son was in college, though, things came to a stop. We got to see a college football game (and enjoyed half time immensely), and now that he’s in a percussion group we’ve gotten to see two or three of his programs. Great band memories!
PVC Pipe Craft Projects
As a teacher and a mom, I like things that encourage creativity in kids and things that are educational. This is an idea I never heard of before, but I like it. During the hot summer months, what a great way to cool off and build something creative at the same time:
This data in this infographic was assembled by Commercial Industrial Supply, a leading pvc pipe and fittings supplier.
Acid Content of Fruits & Veggies
Here’s some helpful information I found online that I wanted to share with you:
This information is from Texas A&M University, and it’s helpful not only for those who can fruits and veggies from their gardens but also for those having stomach problems such as heartburn or indigestion.
Weddings
There are a lot of weddings this summer which means there are a lot of brides who have been looking at wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses such as lela rose. I can’t get over how long it’s been since our daughter was planning her wedding and we were looking at dresses, florists, photographers, caterers, etc. Nine summers ago, we were right in the middle of planning a wedding. Now, they have two little boys with a third child (suppose to be a girl) on the way. Time sure does fly!
Dad’s Cookie Co.
We discovered Dad’s Original Scotch Oatmeal Cookies while visiting the famous St. Louis Gateway Arch two summers ago. These unassuming cookies we bought at the gift store appeared to be just your average cookie, something to snack on until we had supper later that evening. We were pleasantly surprised how delicious these crispy, brown sugar oatmeal cookies tasted.
After researching, we were disappointed to find out that these cookies are only sold in the St. Louis area. However, you can order them online. This year, we wanted the experience of visiting the actual bakery, Dad’s Cookie Co., where the cookies are sold. Once again, these unassuming cookies originate in an unassuming bakery. This location is over 100 years old and carries a lot of history with it. Upon visiting the bakery, it was not what we expected (very small and not updated). However, it was an enjoyable experience that surprised us just like the cookies did.
If you visit the actual bakery, they bag up the cookies the way they always have: in a brown paper bag tied with string. And you get a much better deal on the price: 1 pound of cookies (we got 35-36 cookies) for $3.69 plus the cookies they sell out of their cookie barrel in the store are larger cookies than the pre-packaged ones they sell online. We were pleasantly surprised again!
I talked to a St. Louis local earlier this year and found out she has relatives who make it a point to get Dad’s cookies every time they come to visit. After reading online, there are Dad’s Cookie Co. fans all over the country. I told the local lady that these cookies remind me of ones my mother used to make when I was growing up. She said a lot of people say that!
Here’s what I wrote about our first encounter with these famous St. Louis Cookies, Dad’s Original Scotch Oatmeal Cookies.
Menu Plan Monday 6/25/12
Hope everyone is having a great summer. It sure is hot here in Texas, so that means we won’t be using our oven very often…as little as possible, in fact. Looks like most of the country is experiencing hot weather and most people probably won’t be wanting to use their ovens either, so here are some recipes for hot weather:
.
Monday: Leftovers from the weekend
Tuesday: Tomato-Basil Chicken
Wednesday: Healthy Chicken and Black Bean Burritos
Thursday: Leftovers from Tuesday and Wednesday
Friday: Pizza & salad
“Fairy Hobmother” Visit! Be Sure to Comment!
Guess who visited me! The “Fairy Hobmother!” And your blog might get a visit, too, if you leave a comment here on this post. In fact, I left a comment at Frugal Novice earlier this month, and less than two weeks later I got a visit. Why is this so exciting? It’s because the Fairy Hobmother comes all the way from the UK at Appliances Online to visit bloggers and also give them an Amazon gift card! How exciting is that!!
Appliances Online sells freezers and other appliances plus has been visiting a lot of bloggers and leaving them a nice present. So, if you haven’t been visited by the Fairy Hobmother then leave a comment here (and include your URL so you’re easy to find), and there’s a good chance you will be visited too!
