Our Dog has Bad Allergies!

Our poor little dachshund has terrible grass allergies.  We give her Benadryl and that’s always helped in the past.  She has such bad allergies this year, though, that she chews on herself to the point of bleeding.  She has to wear a cone a lot of the time so she can’t chew on herself when we’re gone or at night when we can’t watch her.  I read online where one vet recommended putting flaxseed on the dogfood and that would eventually eliminate the need for Benedryl.  Well….let me warn you!  I gave it to our dog for two days.  We noticed that everytime she would go outside to go potty, she would stink so badly when she came in.  It was almost a fishy smell.  And I’m not talking about smelling it when you were close to her.  I’m talking about a horrible smell that you noticed when you were several feet away from her.  It was really bad!  I finally made the connection and realized that the flaxseed affected the smell of her urine.  So, NO MORE flaxseed.  She’ll just have to be a “conehead” for a while longer until the grass pollen gets better.

How Many States?

We have been on vacations to several states including our home state of Texas.  We’ve been to Alabama, Wisconsin, Colorado, Florida, and Hawaii.   If you count all the states we’ve been to, that list would be a lot more extensive.  Besides the states mentioned, we’ve been to Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Lousiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan.  That’s 18 states.  Now if I count the states I also went to as a child, then that would be 20.  I’ve been close to Nevado but not actually in the state.  My in-laws have, though.  (I wonder if they stayed at the Rio Las Vegas?)   It’s fun to count up how many states you’ve visited.

A Secret of Strong Families & Marriages

In a study of families, these are a few of the qualities that help to make families strong:

1.) Spend time together as a family. This might be a family outing, playing a favorite game together, or whatever the family enjoys.

2.) Have good communication patterns with lots of talking & listening. Listening and trying to understand are really important.

3.) Express appreciation to one another. Don’t take one another for granted.

4.) Have a sense of commitment to one another. Work as a team.

5.)  Support each other’s efforts.  If someone in the family has a game, concert, or some special event, then go and support that person.

Natural Hormone Cream

A lot of doctors prescribe synthetic hormones for hormone related problems.  After researching various sources through the years, I decided I would never use synthetic hormones myself.  I do use a natural hormone cream, though, natural  compounded progesterone to be exact.  My doctor gave me a prescription for it last year to help correct estrogen dominance that was causing me a lot of problems.  She had been through a lot of the same things I was experiencing and so she prescribed for me what she used herself.  And it made a huge difference and really helped to alleviate my problems.

I wish I had known about natural progesterone cream back when I was having PMS for one week or longer every month during perimenopause.    There are a lot of problems caused by estrogen dominance and natural progesterone helps to correct that imbalance in hormones.

PMS – “Pretty Miserable Syndrome”

If you’ve ever had a problem with PMS, then you can relate to feeling miserable during that time.  Some people refer to it as “pretty mean syndrome,” but I prefer “pretty miserable syndrome.”  True, irritabilty is often a symptom of it.  But a girl can feel miserable from PMS and not be mean.   The symptoms include but are not limited to the following:  backache, headache, bloating and weight gain,  anxiety, depression, food cravings such as chocolate (yum), cramps, fatigue, insomnia, water retention, mood swings, and the already mentioned irritability…sometimes major irritability.  I’m sure our family members can attest to these!  LOL   But for the poor gal experiencing a multiplicity of these symptoms, relief is sometimes hard to find and it’s just a matter of enduring until the symptoms pass.  There are some natural helps out there, though.  I’ve received some natural PMS relief samples that I plan to use which I think will be very helpful from what I’ve read.

Insurance is a Must Have

Insurance premiums are so high, but people need insurance.  There are many types.  We have health insurance, homeowners insurance, flood insurance, car insurance and life insurance.  Some people have even more than that.   We haven’t had a major illness, but without health insurance, skyrocketing medical costs could bankrupt us.   We’ve had to use our homeowners insurance twice, once when a horrific hail storm came through and we had to get a new roof.   The other time was when straightline winds (several locals sited funnel clouds but on TV they said it was straightline winds) blew two huge 60 year old trees over on top of our house.  That created a hole in our daughter’s walk-in closet.  You could stand in her closet and look straight up and see the sky.  So we definitely needed insurance in those two instances.  But the thing about insurance is that it’s so expensive.  That’s why it’s important to find the best price.  One place to check is key man insurance.  Insurance is one thing you don’t want to be without when you need it!

Ragweed is Driving Us Crazy!!!

Ragweed pollen is at such an extremely high level this season that it’s driving a lot of people absolutely crazy. I’m not one to have sinus headaches very often, but I’ve had one nearly every day this week. I have a couple of friends who have developed bronchitis recently, and I’m sure their allergies had something to do with it. I checked at www.weather.com just a minute ago to see what the pollen levels are. Weed pollen is at the “very high” level in so many areas all across the country. I just wish I had bought stock in Sudafed and Benadryl!! LOL Actually, we use the store brands and those work great for us. 🙂

There are some things we can do to help. I try to drink lots of extra green tea and that helps congestion. Also, peppermint oil is great too, so I keep peppermints in my purse. Make sure they’re the kind with real peppermint oil and not just peppermint flavoring. Those won’t work. Drink plenty of fluids, especially hot soup and hot tea or coffee. These help the mucus to flow and relieve sinus pressure and congestion. If my sinuses are hurting on either side of my nose or on my forehead and I’m going to be at home, then I’ll put a little bit of Vicks on those places and that feels so good. If chest or nasal congestion is a problem, then a vaporizor eases breathing and helps clear congestion. Ginger cookies or anything with ginger helps. And my favorite, eat Mexican food!! The spices in it work wonders. So bring on the queso and salsa! That sounds so good I think I’ll go eat some chips and salsa right now!
