Video: What to Do for a Kitchen Grease Fire

Never pour water on a grease fire! Let me repeat, never ever pour water on a grease fire! Do not throw flour or sugar on a grease fire either. Baking soda is OK, but it takes a huge amount of baking soda to eliminate a fire, and the vast majority of people will not have enough baking soda. So…follow these simple tips. Do not move the pan! You could catch your clothes on fire. If the pan has a lid, place the lid on the pan. If you don’t have a lid, wet a large towel completely with water, wring out excess water, then gently lay the wet towel over the pan. If it is a large grease fire, get everyone out of the house and call 911. Use a fire extinguisher if you have one. Be extremely careful of smoke. Smoke can overpower people before they know it and is extremely dangerous. If there is a lot of smoke, stay outside and let the professionals handle it.

Below is a video that shows what happens when water is poured on a grease fire. It also shows how the fire is put out by a wet towel.

Expresso Machines & Coffee Makers

Our son-in-law likes anything that has a coffee flavor to it.  He really likes coffee and espresso as well. Our daughter, however, is just the opposite. She cannot stand anything with coffee flavor to it. She can detect even the slightest hint of a coffee flavor in anything. So we save the coffee and Coffee Nips for our s-i-l. Now if you happen to have someone in your family that is an avid coffee and espresso drinker, then maybe you are thinking about looking at espresso machines for a gift idea. “1st in Coffee” carries high quality espresso machines, cappuccino makers, and coffee makers, and their goal is to offer the best value as well as quality.

Money & Enzymes – Part 2

The faster we “spend” our enzymes, the sooner we run out. What about the person who tries to eat healthy by eating lots of cooked veggies, eats whole grains, takes vitamins, etc.? When food is heated to 118 degrees or above (low to moderate heat), most of the enzymes are destroyed. The more cooked veggies, canned fruit, and processed foods a person eats, the faster they use up their enzymes. If that person inherited limited enzyme activity and rarely eats raw (live) foods, then they will run out of enzymes sooner than someone who inherits a large enzyme reserve or eats a lot of raw foods.

I know I like to save money when I can on good buys. I also like to save enzymes when I can by eating raw foods since enzymes are involved in all of the biochemical processes that go on in our body. In order for our body to absorb enzymes from food, they need to be eaten raw. It would be ideal if we could eat a diet of 50% raw foods. But if we could just eat one raw food at every meal, we would be doing ourselves a huge favor! I can tell a big difference when I eat more raw foods. I definitely feel better!

The Jungle Store carries animal inflatable items, stuffed animals, animal print bedding, and animal print party supplies. In fact, they have the largest selection of stuffed animals on the web and are always adding new animals. They even carry animal greeting cards, gift wrap, and stationary. If you are looking for animal inflatable items or stuffed animals to decorate a child’s room, or maybe you’re a teacher teaching an animal unit, then check out The Jungle Store. If you’re wanting to decorate a bedroom with an animal theme, visit their website and look at the unique bedding they have available. I did and was amazed at all the different animal themed products they carry!

Sugar, Sugar Go Away

Have you ever noticed that the more sugar you eat, the more sugar you want? I was doing so well not eating candy and sweets…until Halloween came along. I can resist the Sweet Tarts, M & M’s, and even some of the chocolate candies. But when we were helping out with the Fall Festival at church on Halloween night, the bean bag game booth that we were working in had “Midnight Milky Ways” in them. Oh no, not dark chocolate…I really like dark chocolate. So I ate one, then another, and then another. Of course, they’re small, little pieces of candy. But you add up 3 here, 2 here, 1 here, and 2 more here and that’s like eating a large candy bar. And then we had candy brought home, and in that candy were some of the Midnight Milky Ways. So, I had a few more the next couple of days. That was enough to set my sweet tooth in motion, and yesterday I ate a whole Dove Dark Chocolate Bar. But you know what? I can tell a difference in the way I feel when I eat a lot of candy. I’ve read in various articles and heard from doctors how bad sugar is for us. And I believe it! I can tell by the way I feel. My husband said he’s noticed the correlation between the time sugar was introduced heavily into the American diet and when Americans started having an influx of certain diseases. There is definitely a link.

I try not to keep chocolate candy in the house during the month of December. I know chocolate is a weakness for me. One year, I bought two or three bags of Ghirardelli chocolate candies to use as stocking stuffers. I bought them on sale for a great price right after Thanksgiving. Well…that candy never made it to the Christmas stockings. I wasn’t the only one eating them, but I was the main one. So now, I wait until right before Christmas to buy candy. And I don’t buy as much candy as I used to, only a little. So now, it’s getting close to December again so I say “Sugar, sugar go away, don’t come again til Christmas Day!” LOL Well….maybe Thanksgiving Day. 🙂

Hamilton Beach® Eclectrics® All-Metal Stand Mixer

When I was growing up, all the relatives would meet at my grandparents’ house for the holidays. My grandmother, mother, and aunts would cook the most delicious homemade dinners. The highlight of every dinner was my grandmother’s rolls. They were so delicious, and everyone ate several…they were that good! I still remember how light and delicate they were. My grandmother passed away many years ago, but I still have her recipe for “Dry Yeast Rolls” written in her handwriting. I would like to share it with you:

DRY YEAST ROLLS: *2 pkg dry yeast *2 cups lukewarm water *1/2 cup sugar *6 1/2 cups flour sifted with 2 tsp salt *1 egg *1/4 cup vegetable oil In mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in sugar. Add half the flour and salt mixture and beat for 2 minutes. Add beaten egg and vegetable oil. Stir well. Add rest of flour mixture and mix well. Grease top of mixture, cover, and put in warm place till double in bulk. Work down, turn out on floured board, and make into rolls. Let rise. Bake at 400 F. This makes 4 dozen rolls. To make 2 dozen rolls, cut all ingredients in half except the egg. Use 1 egg for half the recipe.

I have a 30 year old stand mixer which I’ve used many times through the years. There are a couple of things I wish it had, though, that the Eclectrics® Mixer has such as a splatter shield that would keep the flour from getting all over the counter. The Hamilton Beach® Mixer also has a handle on the side which I really like. My stand mixer, however, does not have one, and I wish it did. It’s so much easier handling the bowl if it does have a handle, especially if your hands are a little damp. I you are looking to buy a stand mixer then I suggest that you check out the Hamilton Beach® Stand Mixer .

Simple Yogurt Recipe – More Natural, Less Sugar, Any Flavor

Have you ever noticed that when you buy yogurt it’s loaded with sugar. I compared a Dove “Rich Dark Chocolate” candy bar (one of my favorites!) to a carton of yogurt. Guess what…the candy bar has 17 grams of sugar, and the yogurt has 27 grams of sugar. Some people would say to buy the “light” yogurt with no sugar, but two of my doctors have told me to stay away from all artificial sweeteners. I know some people need the artificial sweeteners if they have a health problem such as diabetes, but artificial sweeteners are not good for hormones, fibromyalgia, and a host of other ailments. Anyway, back to the yogurt. I found a good way to get good tasting yogurt without a ton of sugar and without any artificial sweeteners is to make my own. Now I don’t start from scratch, I use plain yogurt as my base and then go from there. Here’s the simple recipe:

*1/2 cup plain, nonfat yogurt (sometimes I use Nonfat White Mountain Bulgarian Yogurt which I buy at Central Market)

*1 tbsp of your favorite fruit preserves or 1/2 – 1 tbsp Hershey’s Syrup (5-10 grams of sugar)

*a little dash of Stevia for added sweetness (I use KAL Pure Stevia Extract which has no aftertaste)

You can add a little vanilla flavoring and Stevia to make vanilla yogurt.

I think you could add a little bit of frozen lemonade, lime,or orange concentrate to make those flavors, just watch out for the sugar in the lemonade.

Ratatouille…I’m Not Sure About Eggplant

I read a good post this morning about the kid’s movie, Ratatouille, and a recipe for the actual Ratatouille dish. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten it before, but the fresh veggies and spices sound good…I’m just not sure about the eggplant. Colleen at Table for Five says that it’s sort of like eggplant stew. So, that sounds good and warm on a chilly fall day. I think I might get a small eggplant and try it. Do you note a little hesitancy there? (LOL) If I do make it, I’ll have to let you know how it is. If you make it, I’d love to hear how you like it. Anyway, click here for the recipe.

Discount on Designer Upholstery Fabric

When I was in college, I remember being on a committee to redecorate the waiting area in the front office of our dorm. We decided to reupholster the sofa because it was really a nice sofa. It turned out beautifully! If you or anyone you know is planning on redecorating, consider keeping the current sofa and reupholstering it instead of buying a new one. If you are interested in designer upholstery fabric or trim for your sofa or in curtain drapery, especially if you can get it at a discount, then check out Design Diva Fabrics where you can shop online for designer upholstery fabrics, velvets, chenille, and more.  They have beautiful fabrics!

My Earrings are Driving Me Crazy!!

I don’t look at cute earrings in the store unless they are for sensitive ears because the metal will definitely bother my ears and cause them to itch like crazy. And one of the things I can not stand is for my ears to be itchy all day. So I only look at the sterling silver earrings which greatly limits my choice. If you have a problem with earrings, too, go to the blog below and read about a neat solution that Wanda has for eliminating that problem.

Bargains for Holiday Shopping

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like to get bargains. I like to get bargains on clothes, beauty supplies, appliances, and all sorts of things. My husband likes to get bargains on computer software, music, etc. So I told him about this neat website where we could get tech bargains, and not just a bargain but the best deal. They have email newsletters to let you know about the best deals of the week and “deal alerts” customized to fit your needs and interest. They have RSS feeds that provide you with up-to-the-minute deal information and that can even be accessed on your wireless devices. It’s like having your own personal secretary to keep you updated on the best information 24/7, even on weekends and holidays. All this information is at your fingertips, and you can even get coupons online as well as rebate information. I checked, and they have coupons for digital cameras, DVDs, notebooks, laptops, computer hardware and software, and audio and video gear. Some of the coupons are for Dell, Target, Staples, Circuit City, Office Depot, and Amazon, to name a few. So you might want to check out the coupons.

They have bargains on so many different types of items such as baby items, clothes, music, books, appliances, etc, that you need to check out their website and just see what all they have. Just click on “Find Lowest Prices.” It’s easy to use with a search tab on every page. So check out their website if you’re interested in a bargain on something you’re planning to purchase. With Christmas and the holidays just around the corner, now is a great time to start thinking about gifts. And remember, you can type in a specific deal request with the manufacturer and model number, and Tech Bargains will give you the link to the lowest price they found. What a deal!

Stretch Island Fruit Leather – This is Really a Fruit Snack…100%

Have you noticed that on Fruit Roll-Ups and other “fruit” snacks there’s hardly any real fruit in them. They have so much added sugar and food colorings that they’re on my junk food list. If they have a considerable amount of vitamin C, then they’re on my “better of the junk food list.” Don’t despair, though. There is a fruit snack that is truly a fruit snack. It’s Stretch Island Fruit Leather, and it’s the original, all-natural fruit leather made since 1976. If you look on the label, it’s all fruit and natural flavorings with no added sugar, no food colorings, and nothing that is not natural. I buy them at Central Market, and Albertsons used to carry them. They come in delicious flavors such as “Autumn Apple, Ripened Raspberry, Orchard Cherry, and Summer Strawberry” just to name a few. That made my mouth water just typing in the names.  So…if you want a fruit snack you can feel really good about giving to your kids (or yourself), then try these original fruit leather snacks. They’re great!
