Asbestos & Mesothelioma

The hazards of asbestos were known as early as the 1920’s, and the first lawsuits against asbestos manufacturers were in 1929. Many of the businesses that manufactured products containing the toxic asbestos chose to use asbestos because it was cheap. There was an alternative fiber they could have used. Now, an aggressive cancer called mesothelioma strikes over 3000 individuals per year. Some of those people contact a mesothelioma lawyer.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelial cells and the only known, established cause is exposure to asbestos. In pleural mesothelioma, the toxic asbestos fibers are breathed in and become lodged in the pleural membrane that encases the lung. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which is a cancer of the membrane that lines the abdomen, is a more rare form. There is presently no known cure for mesothelioma.

Don’t Forget to Clean Inside

One thing that really bothers me is breathing the fumes from cars and other vehicles. Our AC/heat system in the van has a button to push to recirculate the inside air so that outside air is not being pulled inside the van. The only thing is that the button has to be pushed each time the vehicle is used, and sometimes I forget…until I’m in a line of traffic waiting at a red light. Then I start to smell the fumes. Just think of all the toxins we get everyday from fumes, pesticides on our foods, added hormones in our meat and even the toiletries we use. Some people like to help eliminate the toxins in their body by using various methods such as a colon cleanse. Drinking lots of water every day is something we should all do to help eliminate some toxins. Eating fiber every day helps, too. We need to clean the inside of our body just like we clean the filters on our AC/heat units and the filters on our clothes dryers. If we let all that stuff collect and never clean it, then we have problems!

Having Trouble Sleeping?

If you’re having trouble sleeping, try these suggestions in the evening:

  • eat melatonin-rich foods such as bananas, oats, rice, sweet corn, ginger
  • eat tryptophan-rich foods such as bananas, dates, figs, milk, nut butter, tuna, turkey, whole grain crackers, yogurt
  • eat grapefruit
  • Avoid caffeine past 2:00 in the afternoon
  • Avoid alcohol – disrupts deep sleep cycles later during the night
  • Avoid tobacco – nicotine is a neurostimulant and can cause sleep problems
  • Avoid eating heavy meals three hours before bedtime.
  • Avoid these foods late in the evening because they contain tyramine which increases the release of norepinephrine (a brain stimulant): bacon, cheese, chocolate, eggplant, ham, potatoes, sauerkraut, sugar, sausage, spinach, & tomatoes
  • Exercise regularly in the late afternoon or early evening but not right before bedtime. This helps you to relax and make the body more tired so that sleep comes more easily.
  • Take a hot bath an hour or two before bedtime
  • Drink a cup of Sleepytime Tea (or chamomile tea)
  • Keep the bedroom dark and the temperature cool
  • Learn to put all worries out of your mind and concentrate on something pleasant & positive

For me, I try to do the above things. I also take two calcium citrate caplets, two magnesium malate caplets, one flax oil capsule, two 5HTPs, and sometimes one melatonin tablet. Every night, I try to eat a banana right before I go to bed. And I don’t take my worries and problems to bed with me. I pray and turn them over to God. That’s what works for me.

Spice-Rack: Cinnamon for Congestion, Diarrhea, & Nausea

2nd-sd-card-cup-of-tea-3-5-09-002

Cinnamon is good for so many things besides making Snickerdoodle Cookies, etc. If you have the sniffles, it can help to relieve congestion.

Make cinnamon tea to help relieve the following:

  • * Congestion
  • * Diarrhea
  • * Nausea
  • * Runny nose
  • * Metabolize fats

How to make cinnamon tea:

All you have to do is make the tea with one cinnamon stick or one teaspoon ground cinnamon (or more to taste), one cup boiling water, and let steep for 15 minutes.  Stir well.  Sweeten with Stevia (this is what I use), honey, agave nector, or your sweetener of choice.

* However, women who are pregnant should not use large amounts of cinnamon, but it’s OK in foods.

Human Touch Zero Gravity Massage Chair

Human Touch is the leader in massage technology and the only brand that is recommended by the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists. It is an award winning company with a vast line of massage chairs and products. What is really incredible is their brand new chair, the HT 7450 Zero Gravity Massage Chair, which reverses the effects of gravity on the person receiving the massage. This chair adjusts the massage to the body frame of the person sitting in the chair, and it adjusts according to their unique physique so that it focuses on the right areas of the body. The Quad Roller System has four techniques that imitate those used by massage professionals, and the person can even add heat or foot massage to their customized massage to ease soreness or just for relaxation. This would make a wonderful gift!

Spice-Rack: Ginger Helps Nausea

Do you ever feel nauseated from sinus drainage or maybe from taking medicine or a vitamin? Sometimes I will feel nauseated from taking a vitamin B or when I have sinus drainage. For some people, motion sickness is a real problem when they travel. And for the expectant mommy-to-be, morning sickness can be a regular daily experience. Well, just look in your spice rack and grab the ginger. I’ve read you can make tea with it using 1 tsp. of ginger with 1 cup boiling water, steep for 10 minutes, strain, and then drink. (I would need sweetener.) I have not tried the tea, but we do keep Ginger Snaps around most of the time. I can eat a couple of those and it really helps my nausea go away.

Money & Enzymes – Part 2

The faster we “spend” our enzymes, the sooner we run out. What about the person who tries to eat healthy by eating lots of cooked veggies, eats whole grains, takes vitamins, etc.? When food is heated to 118 degrees or above (low to moderate heat), most of the enzymes are destroyed. The more cooked veggies, canned fruit, and processed foods a person eats, the faster they use up their enzymes. If that person inherited limited enzyme activity and rarely eats raw (live) foods, then they will run out of enzymes sooner than someone who inherits a large enzyme reserve or eats a lot of raw foods.

I know I like to save money when I can on good buys. I also like to save enzymes when I can by eating raw foods since enzymes are involved in all of the biochemical processes that go on in our body. In order for our body to absorb enzymes from food, they need to be eaten raw. It would be ideal if we could eat a diet of 50% raw foods. But if we could just eat one raw food at every meal, we would be doing ourselves a huge favor! I can tell a big difference when I eat more raw foods. I definitely feel better!

Sugar, Sugar Go Away

Have you ever noticed that the more sugar you eat, the more sugar you want? I was doing so well not eating candy and sweets…until Halloween came along. I can resist the Sweet Tarts, M & M’s, and even some of the chocolate candies. But when we were helping out with the Fall Festival at church on Halloween night, the bean bag game booth that we were working in had “Midnight Milky Ways” in them. Oh no, not dark chocolate…I really like dark chocolate. So I ate one, then another, and then another. Of course, they’re small, little pieces of candy. But you add up 3 here, 2 here, 1 here, and 2 more here and that’s like eating a large candy bar. And then we had candy brought home, and in that candy were some of the Midnight Milky Ways. So, I had a few more the next couple of days. That was enough to set my sweet tooth in motion, and yesterday I ate a whole Dove Dark Chocolate Bar. But you know what? I can tell a difference in the way I feel when I eat a lot of candy. I’ve read in various articles and heard from doctors how bad sugar is for us. And I believe it! I can tell by the way I feel. My husband said he’s noticed the correlation between the time sugar was introduced heavily into the American diet and when Americans started having an influx of certain diseases. There is definitely a link.

I try not to keep chocolate candy in the house during the month of December. I know chocolate is a weakness for me. One year, I bought two or three bags of Ghirardelli chocolate candies to use as stocking stuffers. I bought them on sale for a great price right after Thanksgiving. Well…that candy never made it to the Christmas stockings. I wasn’t the only one eating them, but I was the main one. So now, I wait until right before Christmas to buy candy. And I don’t buy as much candy as I used to, only a little. So now, it’s getting close to December again so I say “Sugar, sugar go away, don’t come again til Christmas Day!” LOL Well….maybe Thanksgiving Day. 🙂

Simple Yogurt Recipe – More Natural, Less Sugar, Any Flavor

Have you ever noticed that when you buy yogurt it’s loaded with sugar. I compared a Dove “Rich Dark Chocolate” candy bar (one of my favorites!) to a carton of yogurt. Guess what…the candy bar has 17 grams of sugar, and the yogurt has 27 grams of sugar. Some people would say to buy the “light” yogurt with no sugar, but two of my doctors have told me to stay away from all artificial sweeteners. I know some people need the artificial sweeteners if they have a health problem such as diabetes, but artificial sweeteners are not good for hormones, fibromyalgia, and a host of other ailments. Anyway, back to the yogurt. I found a good way to get good tasting yogurt without a ton of sugar and without any artificial sweeteners is to make my own. Now I don’t start from scratch, I use plain yogurt as my base and then go from there. Here’s the simple recipe:

*1/2 cup plain, nonfat yogurt (sometimes I use Nonfat White Mountain Bulgarian Yogurt which I buy at Central Market)

*1 tbsp of your favorite fruit preserves or 1/2 – 1 tbsp Hershey’s Syrup (5-10 grams of sugar)

*a little dash of Stevia for added sweetness (I use KAL Pure Stevia Extract which has no aftertaste)

You can add a little vanilla flavoring and Stevia to make vanilla yogurt.

I think you could add a little bit of frozen lemonade, lime,or orange concentrate to make those flavors, just watch out for the sugar in the lemonade.
