More About Having a Small Business

Anyone who has a small business needs to think about how they are going to finance all of the costs involved in running a business. Costs include rent, utilities, insurance, advertising, furnishings for the business, computer, and all of the many small items that are used on a daily or weekly basis. There are unsecured small business loans available for those who are making a certain amount in credit card sales. This might help give a small business the boost that it needs.

Starting a Business

Years ago, we started our own business, but it only lasted for three years. The economy went bad and then the city decided to widen the street in front of our store.  There was construction going on for months and months, making it hard to access our newly founded business. We kept expenses to a minimum and didn’t use a business lawyer.  But still, there are an amazing amount of expenditures for a business.
Now someone starting a business in Raleigh, NC, for example, might want to research business lawyers raleigh nc to start up a business in this day and age. They would have to think about insurance, utilities, advertising, and many other things. Like I mentioned, there are so many costs involved in starting up and maintaining a business!

Going on a Trek

A couple of years ago, our son went on a trek up a mountain in Colorado with a group from church. They had two experienced guides with them which eased my mind about our youngest child (age 17 at the time) going up to the top of a huge mountain. I don’t know if any of them used Trekking Poles or not, but I know they wore cleated shoes to grip the mountain as they went up steep slopes.

The hikers spent the night in tents and ate campers food (the exact opposite of deli food).  Some parts of the mountain trek were extremely challenging (and sounded almost dangerous to me).  I must say that after hearing from some of the other trekkers, we were very proud of our son and how he carried the gear of weaker hikers who were about to collapse, even though that made his load twice as heavy.  That is a memory of his trek that I will always treasure!

Water Softeners

We have a water softener out in our garage. We “inherited” it when we bought this house, but it doesn’t work. We checked into how much it would cost to fix it once, but we decided that the repair was too expensive. Aquatell water softeners and other brands are on the market, and if we really wanted a water softener then it would be better to buy a new one than to have our old one repaired. Do any of you have a water softener?

An Enjoyable Evening

Some friends of ours invited us to go to the Symphony with them last month. They had extra tickets and treated us to a great evening. It was on a Friday evening and people didn’t dress up as much as they do on Saturday evenings. I was glad because I wasn’t in the mood to dress up a lot. (I really don’t have anything fancy)  There were probably people there with diamond earrings and necklaces, Black diamond earrings and nice jewelry, though.  Some people did dress up more than others, but I was fine with how I dressed.

After the concert was over, we went to Starbucks and talked and visited for a while. We all share a love of various types of music. My husband plays not only the guitar (which I’ve mentioned before) but also the violin. Our friend played the viola when she was younger. So it’s just natural that classical music would be enjoyable for both couples.  It was a fun evening just to be with friends

Chair Casters

Something I really appreciate is having computer chairs with casters on them.  My computer chair at home and at work both have casters which makes it so much more convenient when I need to get something close by and don’t want to get up.   I can just roll over and get what I need.

Once we had a chair and one of the casters broke.  It was nice that we (actually, my husband) could replace it so that we could still use the chair which was in great condition.  I’m all for fixing something, if possible!

Cleaning House, etc.

It’s hard coming home from teaching and having the energy to clean house or even cook supper, especially since I stay later most days. I don’t need anything like durham maid service, though, because my husband is good to do most of the house cleaning, do most of the laundry (I wash my own clothes), and do most of the cooking. That really helps because I’m so tired most days when I get home!  Now, during the summer, I do most of the cooking because I enjoy it.  It’s all relative to my energy level.

Menu Plan Monday 10-17-11

This month is one of those overwhelming months with so much to do as a teacher!  But I just remember the verse that says to take one day at a time, and so that’s what I’m doing. Between now and the end of the month, I have four teacher’s testing modules to study and four tests to take, one over each module. (I’m not taking a college course. This is professional development.) Plus I have a fifth module on technology and have to do an online project to turn in and then read 30 pages of a book and be able to discuss at a faculty meeting.  Whew!

I talked with our daughter, Christi @ Frugal Novice, and she has a crazy week too. How many of you remember the old commercials “Calgon, take me away?” 🙂
Needless to say, this week will be bringing in chicken and my husband doing the cooking:
.
Monday: Rotisserie Chicken, broccoli, salad (We ended up not getting a Rotisserie Chicken last week, so it’s on this week’s menu.)

Tuesday: Leftover Rotisserie Chicken, baby lima beans, carrots

Wednesday: Homemade chicken vegetable soup

Thursday: Italian Chicken Pasta (Barilla Plus Pasta) and salad

Friday: Not sure yet.  Our son and his girlfriend will probably be eating supper with us, so I’m waiting to see what sounds good to them.

Watches

I have had the same watch for many years.  It still looks stylish, runs great, and I’m thankful to have it.  Actually, I do have another watch but never wear it because it’s not really my style.  It’s a gold watch, and I wear mostly silver or sometimes a mix of silver and a little gold.  The watch I wear all the time is a mix of mostly silver with a little gold.  Like I mentioned, it’s still stylish!

Renting & Buying a Home

When people have to move to a new location in another city or another state, a lot of them look at a listing of homes for rent instead of buying a home first thing. That way, they have time to study the market, see which area of town they like best, which area suits their needs as far as shopping, school, and medical facilities, etc.  Then when they’ve researched and found where they would like to live, they can begin looking for a house to buy.

Sugar-free Cornbread

Here’s a recipe for those of you who like sweet cornbread but not the sugar!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup flour (Spelt Flour or whole wheat would be good, too)
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal (or 3/4 cup organic cornmeal & 1/4 cup organic coarse cornmeal)
  • 1/3 teaspoon KAL Stevia Powder  (or sugar substitute to equal 1/3 cup sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk (I used reduced fat milk)
  • 1/3 cup EVOO (extra-virgin olive oil)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Oil 9-inch pan with 1 teaspoon olive oil and place pan in oven to preheat.  After the pan is hot, take it out of the oven and add the mixture.  Bake until golden brown on top.

What is a Blackout Watch?

Sometimes I hear about something or see things advertised and wonder what they are.  For example, I had never heard of a “blackout” watch before until I read about Luminox blackout watches recently. After reading just a little bit about them, I learned that they are for the military or for outdoor sporting activities. Do you know anything about these types of watches or do you know anyone who has one?  Just curious!
